Victorian Health Minister Jenny Mikakos resigns

Just a day after Premier Daniel Andrews said she was “accountable” for the failed hotel quarantine programme that unleashed the state ‘s disastrous second coronavirus wave, Victorian Health Minister Jenny Mikakos resigned from the cabinet and Parliament.

“I am disappointed that my integrity has sought to be undermined,” Ms Mikakos said in a statement via Twitter on Saturday morning.

“I know that my statement and evidence [to the inquiry] would have been uncomfortable for some.

“I have today written to the Governor of Victoria to resign my commissions as a Minister effective today. I will also be resigning from the Parliament.”

Over her handling of the coronavirus pandemic and the quarantine policy, which led to Victoria ‘s second coronavirus wave, which claimed the lives of more than 750 people, cost the economy $12 billion and pushed Melburnians into the country’s strictest lockdown, pressure had intensified on the senior Labor Minister.
