A father of five is accused of cutting open a sickle in the stomach of his pregnant wife because he was desperate to find out whether the baby was a boy.
The 43-year-old Indian man, identified only as Pannalal, cut open his wife Anita Devi’s belly at their home in Uttar Pradesh’s Baduan district on Saturday night, reports The Times of India.
It’s known that a priest told the man that his wife had another girl, the sixth girl in a row.
Devi ‘s family told police that Pannalal assaulted his wife in order to “know the child’s gender.”
Devi, 35, was in her 7th month of pregnancy, reports The Mirror.
“My brother-in-law often used to beat my sister for giving birth to five daughters,” Anita’s brother-in-law told The Times of India.
“Our parents had intervened on several occasions.
“But no-one imagined he would take such a cruel step.”
“When I reached there, I saw blood everywhere,” he said.
“Anita’s stomach was split, and she told me that her husband did this.
“I took her to hospital with the support of the police … Fortunately doctors here are supportive.”
Baby girls are routinely abandoned, discarded, and even murdered in parts of India because they are seen as less important than boys.
