The opposition leader of South Australia called for clarification after a paedophile had impregnated a 13-year-old child in state care.
Matthew James McIntire, 35, was jailed for almost two years after seducing the teenager on an instant messaging app.
McIntyre ‘s conduct was described as disgraceful and predatory in the District Court of South Australia on Tuesday.
The offender was brought to a youth worker’s attention after they observed behavioural changes in the teen, according to The Advertiser.
On teenage dating app MyLOL, when the worker checked the girl’s phone they found a “large number of messages” from McIntyre.
The 35-year-old said he assumed that the girl was “17 or 18”
The judge said, however, that McIntyre must have been mindful of the age of the young girl and the fact that she was in state care.
McIntyre picked up the 13-year-old from a state-run facility on January 9 and had unprotected intercourse with her.
The court learned that after that, the teen attempted to end the relationship, but McIntyre persisted.
“It would not be an exaggeration to say that you bombarded your victim with messages even when she told you that she did not want to continue messaging,” Judge Julie McIntyre said in sentencing.
